Noob To Nukeing!!!
Noob To Nukeing!!!
I am always the Healing Monk, always the support player.
Now I want to do damage, with Fire baby!
I know not what skills to use, or weapons, armor, I know nothing. I just made my new Ele today, still in Pre. What should her 2nd Profession be? What problems to Elementalists Face, energy? I want to be able to do massive damage as long as possible, I want to be very good. Since I’m excellent as a Monk, I have to be good as an Ele also.
I heard using Air, Earth, and Water magic are good too; if someone can prove it to me I may be willing to change my ideals.
I am very willing also to try Earth, Water, and Air. Like I said, Im new to the Ele. and want to try everything. I want to do dmg, but, protect myself as well. So, would that not be earth? Im hearing alot about Air Spikers (sp) and thats sounds extremely apealing to me! ^__^
If someone can tell me what good Weapons, Armor, Skills are good (that are still available to be in Pre. Or near where I’ll be starting out) I would like for someone to tell me where I can get these, how, or how much they cost.
I’m very ignorant in this subject, so I need the information clear and simple, since it difficult for me to play melee charas., I’m so just to healing I’m not experienced in doing other things.
Also, I was thinkign about making a Mes/Ele, fast casting and fire dmg, but energy will be a prob, right???
Thankyou, and please help me.
***PM me if you wish.

Okay, the first think you should know is, an Elementalist is nothing like a Monk.
Since you said Pre, I'm guessing Tyria. Do you have access to Factions? I only ask that because when you get to Lion's Arch, you can get other spells over in Canthas.
Now, you will also notice that there are spells in Earth, Air, and Fire (I don't think Water spells have this) have EXHAUSTION. This reduces your maximum energy by x (I can't remember the actual amount). You will be able to recover from exhaustion over time though.
Some of the spells from the Element of Air has armor pentitration and some can be used defensively as well (like Blinding Flash or Windborn Speed). Hydromancers (water elements) can slow down enemies with most spells and some are used for defense as well (Mist Form, blur vision, etc.). Mist Form has a secret flaw - you can cast spells while in Mist Form (you just can't attack with a weapon), but you can suffer from special ablities too - like spells or crippling affect from a crippling shot).
Pyromancers (fire) are usually sought after because of their high damage (meteor shower - buy from Ascolon Settlement - earliest way to get it) causes fire damage, knockdown and exhaustion. Fire is the only element that can cause health degen - burning. Excellent in Shiverpeaks, but almost useless in Fire Island (need winter to be useful).
You will find that energy management will be a problem until you obtain elites. Glyphs will help a little, but you need things like Ether Prodigy or Ether Renewal or (my favorite) Glyph of Energy to be able to cast a lot.
Geomancers (Earth) has the best defense out of all of the elements, and has spells that can ignore resistance and armor. Some spells do pure damage, while other spells (just like other elemental damage) can be reduced or increased by opponent's defenses.
In Pre-seering, I think the best armor can be found at Fort Ranik. I don't know the costs though.
Because of the computer AI, AoE (Area of Effect) spells like Fire Storm (you get for free) may hit only once, then the monsters scatter from that area.
You will need healing, because the Aura of Restoration you get is not very good at all.
Energy management is still needed for an Elementalist so either choose your spells wisely and cast them at the right times, or take a chance and pray that you don't run out of energy for spells that you need in an instant. Mesmers are a good choice, but I don't like their healing abilities either.
Monks are good, but so are Necromancers. If you decide a necromancer, make sure that you get Offering of Blood (elite). This will give you energy.
Don't go melee with an Elementalist.
I think you'll be fine, you've monked, so it won't be that difficult for you. Just take your time.
Have fun!

Maelstrom - but you won't be using that, will you?

Wards, too. You can "nuke" with it, I've heard, in Factions.

Or let your tank tank/use Distortion.
E/Me is what I would use up to Desert, then I would change to /Mo, or whatever I want to capture (elites).

Of course, it's an elite, as you know, so that'd be some time until you get it.
Fire: is useful in early stages, but is used near solely for Meteor Shower's knockdowns afterwards, later on in the game.
Water: is usually useless because once you snare them they're dead already. However, if used in conjunction with other players, can be used very effectively. Not recommended for PuGs.
Air: My personal preference would be using Blinding Flash, Windborne Speed, et cetera.
Earth: Either ward or "nuke". This is also the best soloing element, IMO.
I hate general knowledge answers...

I have Factions, but it dosent work, so Im stuck.
I think I should go with Earth then, so, it would be gppd for my to be a Ele/Mes?

After you level and start to figure out how to chain your spells, playing an Ele is a very addictive thing indeed. For the beginning Ele, there's nothing wrong with starting off with Fire as it's probably the easiest way to dish out damage in the lower levels. As Fire offers the least self protection of all the elements, it's a good way to train yourself on when to fight and when to flee as an Ele. And you can always switch elements easily, just keep your Elemental Rune on your headpiece aura armor and have a headpiece for whatever element you feel like playing for that session.

A quick thing on fast casting Mesmer Eles - Have you noticed how they like to spam firestorm? It saddens me everytime I set some meteor showers down and one of these fast casters come in with firestorm. A waste of 50 energy and some exhaustion on my side.
The essence of a good nuker is simple - Must be able to dish out good damage to a large area without causing the enemy to scatter. As soon as they start scattering the aggro that your tanks have created are gone. Your monks will not be happy about this

Even if you don't dish out that uber damage you're rumored to have using MS, at least you get knockdowns, which aren't bad at all.

I'm a fire ele and i definatly think you should start off with fire element so you can learn when to fight and flee as ozric said. Also there are lots more fire spells nearer the beginning. I prefer fire myself probably because of the high damage (I have my own winter spell for the ring of fire). But i think changing to earth element when you progress further in the game would be a good idea sounds like quite a good idea, I'm even thinking of converting myself and trying out some new things

Don't stay in one element and think it's high damage, try some other elements out. Furthermore, don't stay in the Elementalist class thinking it's high damage, try some other classes out.
